Set goals worth tracking

So many teams avoid goal-setting because it feels too heavy or complicated. “Set measurable goals” can sound so empty sometimes like a buzzword.

But here’s the truth: you don’t need a KPI wall of dashboards and a PhD in data analytics to track the impact of your design system updates.

You just need a few simple, clear signals to answer the question:

“Did this update land the way we wanted it to?”

📏 Start small. Keep it real.

If you’ve never tracked your releases before, that’s okay. Don’t get caught up trying to set “perfect” goals — just start somewhere.

Try this:

  • Pick 1–3 outcomes you want to see (we’ll help below)
  • Write them down before you launch
  • Then check back in a week or two — and learn from it

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s momentum.

💭 What should you track?

Here’s a quick suggestion guide based on what you’re releasing:

If you’re launching… Look for… Supernova analytics dashboard (per-page)
A new or refactored component Visits to your tokens page before vs. after Use 7-day / 30-day filters
A documentation restructure Engagement with new layout or renamed pages Supernova: top pages + total sessions
A major design system release Overall session spike, more team interaction Supernova global views + Slack engagement
A specific team-targeted change Are those teams asking fewer questions or referencing the docs more? Look for Slack reactions, team feedback, or direct mentions

🎯 Not sure how much is “good”? Here’s a cheat code:

If you don’t have baseline data yet, that’s totally fine. Here are a few starting-point examples you can riff on:

  • “New component page should get at least 100 views in the first 7 days”
  • “Token documentation should get more visits than last month”
  • “Slack post announcing the update should get 5+ reactions or 2 follow-up questions”
  • “Sessions should spike in the first 3 days post-release”

You can get fancier over time. But even just having a goal gives you something to aim for — and celebrate.

💡 Pro tip: use your goals to shape your messaging

Once you know what you’re hoping to see, you can guide your audience there.

  • Want people to use the new component? Link directly to the docs in your Slack post.
  • Want to promote the token update? Add a note in the changelog and your weekly design/dev sync.
  • Want more feedback? Ask for it explicitly in your release message.

Your goals aren’t just for after the launch — they help shape the launch itself.

📊 And of course… Supernova has your back

You don’t need to set up Google Analytics, or ask someone for numbers, or guess.

Supernova gives you:

  • Page views (globally and per page)
  • Sessions over time (hello, trend spotting)
  • Top-performing pages
  • Filters for 7/30/90/180/365 days

Just open the dashboard and boom — you’ll know if your update is getting traction or flopping quietly in the background.

The TL;DR?

  • You don’t need a fancy dashboard — just pick a few outcomes you want to see
  • Match your goals to what you’re releasing (we gave you a table!)
  • If it’s your first time, keep it simple — page views, sessions, reactions, engagement
  • Your goals help guide what you communicate and what you track
  • Supernova makes it super easy to measure without setup or stress
