Setting Up Navigation Between Separate Systems

When working with multiple design systems, it’s important to make the user experience across documentation seamless and intuitive. Supernova allows you to do just that with Multi-design System Navigation.

Instead of siloed, disconnected documentation websites, you can interconnect your design systems into a cohesive, navigable ecosystem. This is especially useful for large teams, organizations with multiple product verticals, or companies with different design systems for legacy and new platforms.

What is Multi-Design System Navigation?

Multi-design system navigation allows you to connect multiple Supernova design systems within your documentation experience. It enables your consumers to easily switch between systems, just like they would navigate between pages on a single site.

How It Works

When enabled, viewers can access a dropdown menu in your documentation UI that lets them switch between enabled design systems.

This navigation supports URL-matching, meaning that if a page URL is the same in the design system they are viewing, the context is preserved when switching—creating a seamless experience for users while maintaining operational separation for contributors.

How to Set It Up

Setting up multi-design system navigation is straightforward in Supernova:

  1. Enable Navigation in Each Design System

Navigate to Documentation > Settings > Advanced in each Design System.

  1. Toggle Multi-Design System Navigation

Turn on the option "Switch between design systems in documentation."

  1. Select Systems to Include

Choose which other design systems from your workspace should appear in the navigation dropdown.

  1. Publish Changes

Publish your documentation so viewers can see and use the new navigation immediately.

➡ What’s Next?

Now that navigation is set, let’s explore how to manage visibility and permissions across multiple systems—so your contributors stay focused and your consumers always see the right content.
